Second thing that happens is that we lose bone. Bony resorption, which means, the orbit, or the eye socket, starts to get bigger. So, we start developing a sunken in appearance, a tired, sallow look.
We start reabsorbing bone in this area, that's why we develop those deep laugh lines. Sometimes these deep lines occur because we're continually contracting these muscles over time and we lose bone here, in the mandible. That's why we develop marionette lines and jowls and things like that.
But there's something else at play too, that rarely gets talked about...
Believe it or not, the human eye can't see a wrinkle by itself.
It can only see the shadow inside the wrinkle!

So here we have this woman, and as you can see, there are multiple lines and wrinkles around the eyes, around the mouth, around the neck, as well as the forehead. But it's not just the wrinkle that you're seeing, because we can't necessarily see the wrinkle - we see the shadow that's within the wrinkle itself.
Just by eliminating the shadows, her skin appears brighter, we see less contour irregularities, it appears firmer than it was. You'll notice that this person is slowly looking younger and younger.
So in order to erase a wrinkle's appearance, you must do two things:
#1) Fill in the crease itself
and
#2) Reflect light away from it — to make the shadow invisible
